The Art in Selling
n running an art business, wearing many hats is a wardrobe you have to get used to. It’s nearly impossible to create or produce quality work while scheduling deliveries and drafting the best plan of attack to market which often gets pushed to the back burner. The worst part is: your enthusiasm in what you sell or do doesn’t always translate to traction. And that’s okay.
How is that okay?
We only need to focus on metrics that matter.
What should we prioritize then?
1. Loyalty over Likes
Understand that likes and follows are inappropriate units of measurement to gauge engagement and sales. They are not 100% reflective of a business’s success or an accurate measure of attention an audience is giving you. There is no number to measure loyalty, there is however art in it. It’s obviously similar to relationships where being liked is not enough to keep one.
2. Impact over Trend
Understand your market. Remember that your market isn’t everyone and it doesn’t have to be. Your art doesn’t need to constantly be exposed, it just needs to make sense to the right people.
In essence, don’t EVER make art for likes. Make art for impact. The rest will follow.

But is it a work that help us designers grow? Do we even have enough time and headspace to grow?
